Back-to-School Dental Care: A Parent’s Complete Checklist

As the back-to-school season begins, families often focus on fulfilling school supply lists, figuring out new schedules, and preparing children for a successful year in the classroom. While backpacks, lunchboxes, and new shoes are important, you should also prioritize your child’s oral health.

A healthy smile can help children feel more confident, avoid painful dental emergencies, and stay focused in class. Whether your child has braces, clear aligners, or needs a routine dental checkup, a little preparation can make a difference throughout the school year.

Use this dental and orthodontic checklist to keep your child’s smile healthy all year long.

Schedule a Dental Checkup

One of the best ways to start the school year is with a professional dental exam and cleaning. Regular checkups allow your dentist to detect cavities early, remove plaque and tartar buildup, check gum health, monitor tooth development, identify orthodontic concerns, and apply fluoride treatments.

If your child hasn’t seen the dentist in the past six months, back-to-school season is the perfect time to schedule an appointment.

Stay Current with Orthodontic Appointments

If your child wears braces or clear aligners, keeping up with orthodontic visits during back-to-school season is essential. Regular adjustments help ensure teeth continue moving according to plan and allow the orthodontist to replace worn bands or wires, check for broken brackets, monitor treatment progress, and address any discomfort or concerns.

Missing appointments during back-to-school season can delay treatment and extend the amount of time your child needs orthodontic care.

Replace Worn Toothbrushes

A new school year is a great time to replace old toothbrushes. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed, your child has been recently sick, or the toothbrush no longer cleans effectively.

For children with braces, orthodontic toothbrushes or electric toothbrushes can make cleaning around brackets much easier.

Stock Up on Oral Hygiene Supplies

Having the right supplies readily available encourages healthy habits. Consider stocking up on fluoride toothpaste, dental floss, floss threaders for braces, interdental brushes, and orthodontic wax. If recommended by your dentist, buy a water flosser and have sugar-free mouth rinse on hand.

Keeping extra supplies at home and in your child’s backpack makes it easier to maintain good oral hygiene throughout busy school days.

Pack Braces-Friendly Lunches

School lunches can have a significant impact on oral health. Help your child choose foods that are nutritious while also gentle on braces, such as yogurt, cheese sticks, bananas or berries, apples sliced into small pieces, sandwiches, pasta salad, eggs, smoothies, or whole-grain wraps.

Avoid packing foods that can damage braces or affect oral health, such as hard candies, popcorn, nuts, sticky caramel, taffy, chewy candies, whole apples, or hard pretzels. These foods can break brackets or bend wires, leading to unexpected orthodontic visits.

Encourage Healthy Beverage Choices

Many school drinks contain high amounts of sugar and acid that contribute to tooth decay. Try to limit the consumption of soda, sports drinks, energy drinks, and sweetened juices, and encourage your child to choose water, milk, or unsweetened beverages.

Water is a great choice as it helps rinse away food particles and bacteria accumulated throughout the day.

Create an After-School Brushing Routine

From homework and sports to music lessons and extracurriculars, busy schedules can make oral hygiene easy to forget.

Help your child build a consistent routine by encouraging them to brush twice daily for at least two minutes, floss once daily, clean thoroughly around brackets and wires, and wear rubber bands or aligners exactly as instructed.

Consistency is key in preventing cavities and achieving the best orthodontic results.

Prepare for Sports Season

Small orthodontic problems don’t always require an emergency visit if you’re prepared.

If your child wrestles or plays football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, hockey, or other contact sports, ask your dentist about being fitted for a mouthguard.

Children with braces should wear orthodontic mouthguards designed to protect both their teeth and orthodontic appliances from injury.

Watch for Signs of Dental Problems

Between regular appointments, keep an eye out for symptoms that may require professional attention, including tooth sensitivity, toothaches, bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, loose brackets or wires, broken retainers, difficulty chewing, or swelling or facial pain.

Addressing concerns early often prevents more serious problems later.

Give Your Child a Healthy Start to the School Year

Back-to-school season involves more than purchasing school supplies and new clothes. A healthy smile helps children eat comfortably, speak confidently, and concentrate in the classroom without the distraction of dental pain or orthodontic issues.

If it’s time for your child’s next dental cleaning, orthodontic adjustment, or consultation, now is the perfect time to schedule an appointment at Great Falls Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics and start the school year with a smile.
